Best Sunscreens of 2021

There are 3 golden rules when it comes to wearing sunscreen – wear it all-year-round, wear it even when you’re indoors and reapply it every 2 hours. Abide by these and you’ll thank yourself a few years down the line for skin that’s youthful, radiant and healthy.

‘Who wears sunscreen indoors?!’

You might be wondering, ‘Why do I need to wear sunscreen indoors?’ The Sun’s rays consist of UVA and UVB rays. While UVB rays can cause sunburns, UVA rays can contribute to skin ageing and skin cancer. Ava Shamban, a dermatologist from Los Angeles sheds light upon how they can wreak havoc on your skin even when you’re indoors. “Indoor UV exposure can occur from ultraviolet rays that penetrate through glass, which is UVA.  UVA is emitted at the same level — all day long — whereas UVB rays, which are blocked by glass peaks mid-day.”says Ava.

‘How do I pick the right one?’

A good sunscreen should be an indispensable part of your daily skin-care regimen.  But how do you go about picking the right one?

Let’s start by understanding the types of sunscreens that exist in the market.

Types of Sunscreens

Sunscreens can be broadly divided into physical and chemical versions. While the physical blockers contain zinc oxide or titanium oxide to deflect the UVA and the UVB rays, the chemical ones come with avobenzone and oxybenzone that absorb the rays and convert them to heat.  When it comes to application, physical blockers work immediately after you apply them whereas chemical blockers need about 30 minutes to kick in. Physical sunscreens are better for those with sensitive skin, rosacea or underlying melasma, for they deflect heat rather than absorbing its energy, inturn leaving the skin feeling soothed.

‘But what is SPF?’

Another key thing to know about sunscreens is SPF or Sun Protection Factor. A sunscreen with SPF 30 indicates that it protects your skin from ultraviolet rays 30 times more than not applying it at all.

‘Two drops on my palm should be enough right?’

Last but not the least, be generous while applying sunscreen. An entire teaspoon is the amount that’s really needed for your face and neck, rather than a few drops.

‘Tell me which ones to add to cart already!’
